Analysis
Here is a film review page from Total Film that we have analysed.
The sections have been colour coded for easy reference, each box on the sides corresponds with a feature in the review.
Here is the review layout analysis in list form:
Page Title - The title of the page implies that the film is in cinemas now. It is positioned at the top left of the page, it's emboldened so it stands out, so readers remember that it's in cinemas and that they can go and see it.
Image - The dominating image in the review is a still from the movie and it takes up the top half of the page.
Image Caption - A witty caption is superimposed on the bottom half of the image, its is white, in a small font size and in italics so that it stands out but does not take focus away from the image.
Film Title - The film's title is in upper-case letters, emboldened and black so that it stands out, and becomes the focus of the page as the magazine wants the reader to remember what the movie is called.
Certificate - The certificate of the movie is placed beside the film's title and is in a cautionary red colour, as it's important to inform potential viewers of the certificate of the film.
Tagline/Caption - The magazine/reviewer has created another witty tagline to describe the plot of the film.
Film Details - There is a section withc all the crucial film details such as the director, distributor, actors, ect.
Plot - There is a section where the synopsis/storyline is presented so that the readers can get an idea of what the film is about (if they haven't watched it) and this will enable for the actual review to make more sense to them as they have a little bit of a backstory.
Review - The actual written review is split into four coloumns, and is the second largest feature (after the image) of the review page. It's finished with a byline of the reviewers name.
Diagram - The review page includes a diagram which is a prediction of how interesting an audience may find the film.
Verdict - The review is finished off with a box containing the reviewerd verdict and final decision of the film, along with a 4-star rating which makes his opinion more visually stimulating.
Structure and Layout
Now that we familiarised ourselves with the structure and layout of a film review page, we started to create our own one , first we decided on how the fundamnetal layout would be presented. Here is an image depicting this:
We decided that we would follow the layout of the magazine review page we analysed. We wold have a still image from our film 'Torches' at the top taking up half of the page, as this is a common convention we see in a lot of magazine film reviews. We would then have the page title placed in the top left hand corner. Our film title would be placed just underneath the film still image. And below that in the left hand side we would have a column with the details of our films such as : certificate, director, etc.
We would then have two other columns beside our first one with the main body of the review. And on the bottom right hand side we wold conclude our review with a verdict box and star rating.
Here is our finished magazine film review page which has been made with the influence of an Empire magazine review page. It includes the main credentials and details of the film, for example; the release date, certificate, director and main actors as well as the plot.
We then have the main body of the review which describes and informs an audience about the film in a subjective way. Other features include images from the movie with captions, and then a 'Look Closer' section which gives a a few fun facts about the movie. There is a quotation that has been highlighted giving the audience an inkling to what the review may sound like at first glance. The review is concluded with the verdict of the film and 5 star rating, finalising the authors opinions.
